Ryan Palk was recently in Rio for a familiarisation visit of the Olympic sailing venue and conditions conducted at the same time as the Olympics will be conducted in 2016. He reports here on his experience.

I didn’t really know what to expect on arrival in Rio. We were met with protesters in our street and an electrifying vibe that lets you know this place has an amazing energy and serious side to it. Rio is somewhere that offers a multi layered atmosphere that constantly keeps you on your toes.

As a sailing venue, wow, complex is an understatement for some of the most tidal and polluted waters I have set sail on. There are some 6 million people that live in this city in an area that would struggle with 1 million. As a result, the densely populated regions and suburbs are sprawled with debris and pseudo houses, otherwise known as ‘favellas’. Some of them are positioned atop large mountains with spectacular views, while the structural integrity of some of these sky dwellings might not be world class, the view certainly is, allowing most of what is a poor country to witness a beautiful and diverse local geography and natural landscape that is quite breathtaking in its own way.

The nine lane highways and crowded little streets offer access between the crowded metropolis, and also act as shop fronts for hussling loiterers and random sellers. As the Olympic venue for 2016, it is going to be an amazing place to see come alive with the spirit and spark of what is a very welcoming and passionate people.

While the sailing here this week has been tricky, I have enjoyed every moment of it. As for the ups and downs that may be involved with any place or journey, I have come out the other side a little wiser, smarter and happy to have experienced such an interesting place and have the realisation of how unique this place truly is.

A big thanks to the Australian sailing management for doing the ground work in researching this place before we came, the AOC liasion Michelle for keeping us out of trouble and our drivers for keeping us alive on these crazy streets of Rio!

I’m off to Ireland now for the Laser Europeans. Until next time Rio, tudu bang!
