Max Quirk headed off to Bermuda on Wednesday to join up with sixteen of the world’s best Optimist sailors for the Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup, at the invitation of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

The international skippers will compete in the Cup against local Optimist sailors in the 11th annual five-day regatta. The sailors and their parents are being hosted by the local club and billeted out with club members.

It’s a long way to go for a week’s worth of sailing, but for the 14-year-old Quirk, who is Australia’s top ranked Optimist sailor, it’s the opportunity of a life-time.

“I really am very humbled to be given such an amazing opportunity. I will be sailing against the very best sailors from the other countries and it’s such a legendary sailing spot. It will be pretty tough competition”, Quirk said.

Quirk will be mixing it up with several of his newly found friends from his participation in the Optimist World Championship in July where he finished in 90th overall. “I have looked at the entry list and there are a few familiar names. It will also be good to meet up with New Zealand’s, Henry Haslett. We have become really good friends. “

At the same and at the same venue as the Junior event, the world’s best Match Racers will be competing in the Argo Gold Cup. Included in the luminary group of sailors will be four-time Olympic Gold Medallist and 34th America’s Cup Oracle Team USA tactician, Ben Ainslie.

“I think Ben Ainslie will be presenting the regatta trophies. That will be awesome. I’ve got a lot of stuff, like sailing gear, for Ben to autograph, hopefully. “

Quirk has displayed a high level of maturity in his regatta preparation program. Without the direct assistance of a coach during the last two months, he has devised a training program based on what he learnt in the lead-up to his 2013 World Championship campaign. “I have been doing a fair bit of training on the water, just in the canals here on the Coast as tt looks like being a light regatta, just like Lake Garda earlier this year.

“I have been practicing boat handling and light wind tacks and all that kind of stuff. Pretty much I set up my own training program, but the coaches I had before the Worlds have influenced what I have been doing now.”
