29 days 13 hours 47 mins 17 seconds: a continuous countdown edging closer and closer to the, ’69th Rolex Sydney to Hobart.’

In the minds of Steve Carey’s Deja Vu band of brothers and sister, this ominous day has been the result of careful planning, discussions and watching the sun fall to the west as another Carlton Draft is pitched into the air. Undoubtedly a race that raises eyebrows, and inspires individuals to test their metal with the best.

For this modest but adventurous crew, the idea of the Sydney to Hobart is a black monolith standing in the foreground; an impenetrable force protected by only the ones that have sailed out of the Sydney heads into the great beyond….’HOBART.’

Like any preparation Steve and his motley bunch have come together and discussed game plan tactics, and who is packing the beer. Wednesday twilights, saturday bash and grabs and boat overhaul inspections, has seen the crew grow strong and solid as a dedicated legion of disciples heading out for their pilgrimage.

However, no matter how much planning is undertaken, curve balls are always at play; and for this happy go lucky bunch, sad and happy faces have swung around like the winds of Port Phillip Bay: first was awaiting the green light on a stability test for the class 2 standards of Sydney to Hobart, after many conversations, calculations, cursing and swearing, ‘Deja Vu,’ entered the S2H; then, what should have been a routine sail, proved otherwise, ‘Deja Vu,’ hits a reef in the beloved bay whilst crew prepare and organise the game plan for a 24 hour passage race.

Within minutes of leaving, a crew of titans were reduced to godless creatures awaiting a worst case scenario…’massive structural hull damage!!’ Yet it is here,in the darkness that ones true occupation will be tested, and forthwith: perish or rise!! Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the, ‘Deja Vu,’ still had a chance; without a second’s hesitation Steve Carey masterly conducted the required symphony of personnel who would carry out the, ‘Magnus opus.’ If not for the recruitment of RYCV’s finest craftsmen, Deja Vu may still be hanging mid air awaiting attention like a retired horse.

And as the name might suggest, “Deja Vu” was in the minds of crew and vessel as all habitual routines transpire: slipping into wet weather gear, securing lanyards to Ray-bans and un-creasing folds in headsails. This magnificent starry-eyed 8 who, like their forefathers will compete for many reasons: from line honours, overall handicap and divisional winners, for Mr. Carey and his devoted titans of the sea simply completing this truly epic adventure will excite the imaginations of a crew who like many before have endured the lows and highs, the disappointment, the jubilation, the swearing of never again, shortly thereafter replaced with…can’t wait to do it again!
