The smell of epoxy resin teased the olfactory glands of anyone walking through the boat park outside the boating club at Takapuna Beach this morning.

This coupled with the glint of sunlight flashing on the weave of carbon cloth gave a clue to some of the intense work underway as the sailors laminated broken boats back to completeness. After yesterday’s tough conditions the sailors in the A Class Catamaran World Championships worked hard to make sure that their boats would be up to speed for the resumption of competition tomorrow.

Today was a much needed lay day for the sailors, and while some took the opportunity to repair boats, others took the opportunity to repair the body with some R & R.

The highlight on the social calendar was the factory tour of the Southern Spars facility in Auckland accompanied by a beer or wine and kiwi barbeque.

While touring the factory looking at the huge masts and spars that represent the other end of the boat building market to any A-Class, many of the sailors eyed the offcuts of carbon, clearly thinking about strengthening their boats.

The facility was impressive and there was plenty of interest in every aspect of the design, build and finishing processes on show within the building. From the clean laminating room, to the enormous autoclave, and five axis trimming and cutting robot, avid groups stood watching the robotic machines while discussing the moulds, the art of carbon laminating and the rigging components.  Discussions continued outside over a cold beer and barbeque,  a welcome end to the tour where factory staff chatted with the sailors about boats and structural integrity, and of course foils and the America’s Cup.

Southern Spars are proud to play a part in the technological advances made in sailing and are an active and generous supporter of the A-Class catamaran class, and the 2014 World Championships.

The competition starts again in earnest tomorrow, with lighter conditions predicted, a welcome relief to many of the sailors still recovering from Race Three. The leader board is still close, giving many of the top sailors a chance at the title.

Sailing resumes tomorrow (Saturday) at 13.00 New Zealand Daylight Time.
