Seven teams will compete in the annual Marinassess Women’s Match Racing regatta, that will conducted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Youth Sailing Academy aboard the Elliott 7s this weekend; with Milly Bennett, representing the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, the highest ranked skipper in the event.

Bennett has been progressing through the match racing ranks over the last two years with her best results including two seconds in the Club Marine NSW Youth Match Racing Championship last August and the Australian Women’s Match Racing Championships last September and finishing third in this regatta last year.

This has seen her charge up the ISAF rankings over the last twelve months – last year, prior to the start of the Marinassess regatta, Bennett was ranked 157th and today her current ranking is 15th. She has recently returned from competing in the Nespresso Youth International Match Racing Championships in Auckland, where she finished ninth and is hoping to improve on her results this weekend.

Rayshele Martin, the Australian Women’s Match Racing title holder, is the second highest ranked skipper this weekend.

Bennett will face off against the Australian Women’s Match Racing title holder, Rayshele Martin, whom she lost to last September. Martin, representing the CYCA, is second highest ranked skipper with an ISAF ranking of 24.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia will field six of the seven teams – all of whom have been training throughout the summer through the Friday evening Women’s Squad.

Rayshele Martin’s crew includes Kathleen Stroinovsky, last year’s winning skipper, Amanda Woolf, Shahrzad Vahebzadeh and Elizabeth Robinson and is hoping to continue her winning form from last September.

Emma May, Greta Quealy, Nina Long, Kate Downing and Lauren Gallaway will skipper the remaining CYCA teams with Downing and Gallaway the only two without a current ISAF ranking. Lauren Gallaway is the youngest skipper in the regatta.

May has been a member of the Youth Sailing Academy for the last two years and has been making the transition from Flying 11s and Cherubs.

This is the second competitive regatta May will helm and she is the third highest ranked skipper. Together with her crew of Tara Blanc-Ramos,Nicky Bradley, Caitlin Tames and Francesca Earp, she is looking to improve on their results from last year’s regatta.

Commodore Howard Piggott said “We welcome all these competitive teams to the Marinassess Women’s Match Racing Regatta and look forward to some great displays of match racing prowess.”

“Marinassess have been sponsors of this important regatta for 19 years and the CYCA gratefully acknowledges the ongoing sponsorship from past Commodore John Messenger and Marinassess of this regatta, women’s match racing and the Youth Sailing Academy,” Commodore Piggott said.

Racing commences on Saturday 1 March at 1015hrs, in the vicinity of Rushcutters Bay, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting east to south easterly winds of up to 10 knots becoming north easterly 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon with patch rain throughout the day.

The event will conclude on Sunday 2 March when the second round robin and finals will be conducted. Should time and conditions permit, crews will participate in a fun fleet race at the conclusion of racing tomorrow. Live results will be available on from the commencement of the round robins.
