Masters’ sailors still dominate the Mt.Martha Laser fleet, where our slowing reaction times and decreasing stamina is thankfully more than outweighed by our fleets enthusiasm and sense of fun!

This will change next season with a small fleet of youngsters in 4.7’s promised from our successful youth program and new parent members. Also we could have about ten girls sailing on a good day so look out boys!

This season saw the more hardy brave it through winter to be ready for early coaching sessions with Sarah Ogilvie that were then ramped up in December by the very capable Mr. Sean Bly! Sarah for unknown reasons didn’t choose any of our Laser sailors’ names for her baby, Ava, born in January! Strange that.

The division saw much healthier numbers sailing again with the better weather and winds over the summer break. With many new faces to the division now regularly upsetting the “old guard” in the pecking order with racing being very closely fought for most of us. One mistake (Oh to be so lucky!) such as a bad start, falling out of the boat or even missing a shift or two can be the difference between success and failure! And you can be guaranteed this will be re-told and embellished on at the compulsory re-hydration session post race!

This season we viewed as a “works in progress” as we tried to raise our sailing standard to hopefully one day match the “guns” at yacht clubs such as McCrae and Port Melbourne. This entailed members attending more regattas away from home than before, with the likes of the Port Phillip championships through to the Nationals. All those that went enjoyed the regattas so much it will surely rub off onto other members to join us next season. The National Masters being for many the height of the season for sailing competition and shear enjoyment! Again, thankyou to all those that ran and organised it!

Planning is now underway for another winter of sailing and coaching, with we hope, more venues participating and with a bit of luck the VLA looking at some frosty events to keep us enthused and allow us to make some new friends! Who needs snow? If you are looking for a casual winter sail drop me an email. During the season we sail every Sunday at least (check our website) so please feel more than welcome to come join us! And we would love to return the favour, as well as with planned VLA “Activate” and coaching days in the pipeline for an exciting next season!\
