The CYCA team of Sam Ellis, Matt Stenta and Cam Gundy have finished second in the Round Robins in the Match Racing class at Oceania of Sailing.

It was a beautiful second day on the Oceania of Sailing.

According to Philippe Mazard, the president of the Caledonian sailing league “this second day was a great achievement: the weather conditions and the races timing are more than satisfying. The organization quality in very good, which implies a good atmosphere among the runners. The races are hotly contested.”

In the Match Racing, 25 matches were run today with a light wind in the early morning and then went up to 15 knots during the afternoon. It was a beautiful day with a homogeneous fleet and many twists and turns …

The winner of the Round Robin is the team from Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron led by Georges Brassel and they have directly qualified for the semifinals.

Other crews qualified for the quarter finals include: Sam Elis (CYCA); Alan Quere (CNC); Vincent Trinquet (CNC), Jean Louis Chabaud (CNC); Tugdual Piriou (CNC) and Cédric Bouchet (CNC)

CYCA Coach Jay Griffin reports: “Day two got underway on time seeing the CYCA resume their good form continuing.

The breeze gradually increased throughout the day with shifts to the left and right making for exciting racing with many lead changes. With a format similar to the World tour, all was to play for with the CYCA team fighting for first place and an automatic entry to the semi-finals.

Winning another three races to complete the round robin saw CYCA tied for first place with only one race to go. With the RNZYS team leading off the line, CYCA had a lot of ground to catch up. Good boat speed and boat handling saw the crew get within boat lengths of the strong New Zealand crew but unfortunately they held strong and fended off the attacks to take the win and in doing so claiming the entry into the semis.

As second place in the round robin, CYCA was able choose their quarterfinal opponent and take the starboard entry.”

Tomorrow the races will begin at 11 am. At the end of this second Round Robin, only the 3 best teams will join the qualified crew from RNZYS in the semi-final,

Today the Caledonians sailors show a beautiful performance: 5 crews are qualified for the quarter finals. The Australian crew of Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club skipped by Rick Connor finished 9th. The second crew from RNZYS led by Lucas Chatonnier finished 10th. These two teams do not qualify for the quarter final.
