Forty two boats contested the fourth race of Fremantle Sailing Club’s Challenger Cup winter series on Saturday 12 July 2014.

Light North Easterly airs proved a challenge with over half the fleet failing to finish within the time limit.  First boat home was Robert Halvorsen’s Giddy Up sailing the shorter (7.3NM) Jib and Main division course.

First in from the Division One fleet’s longer (13.1NM) course was Tony Mitchell’s TP52 Calm – nearly 40 minutes ahead of Ross Swanson’s Syrenka.  The light North Easters favoured the larger faster boats and frustrated those further back in the fleet with time getting the better of three starters, including Les Middleditch’s Raya who was tantalisingly close to the finishing line when time ran out.  Calm took the Division One honours on handicap from Ian Clyne’s Joss and Paul Arns’ Wasabi, with Calmleading from Wasabi and Joss on IRC.

Division Two featured a close battle for line honours between Laurie Flynne’s Dynamic and Bruce Wilkinson’sTurkish Delight with only 28 seconds separating them on the line.  Although Dynamic crossed first she slipped to fourth on handicap with Turkish Delight winning over Steve Delfos’s Minke and Peter Henley’s Cutty Wren.  On IRC Dynamic led from Minke and Cutty Wren.

Division Three were engaged in a frustrating battle against time.  Jaye Martin’s Nuzulu was leading the fleet and on the last leg of the 10.5 mile course when the 3.5 hour time limit expired – much to the disappointment of her usual rivals who hoped she’d make the line in time and give the rest of the fleet another forty five minutes in which to finish.

The conditions also favoured the faster boats in the Jib and Main fleet with Robert Halvorsen’s Giddy Up taking both line and handicap honours from Rob Thomas’s Finistere and John Holder’s Plus 16.  On IRC Plus 16 led from Finistere and John Hector’s Myuna.

The next Challenger Cup race is on Saturday 26 July and the competitors are hoping for a break from the light breezes of the first four races.
