Mooloolaba Yacht Club (MYC) will introduce in September Serve II Sail an innovative sailing experience program for wounded Veterans.

The program has been modelled on a similar program run successfully in Perth. Using the club’s four Elliott 6m keel boats with sailing on the calm waters of Mooloolah River in front of The Wharf Mooloolaba, Serve II Sail will start with a Pilot Program run with six participants. From there the MYC will confirm the dates for at least four more sessions during 2015.

Leading the program design and delivery is program mentor, Billy Golbourn, an ex-British serviceman injured in Afghanistan. Golbourn started sailing with the British group, Toe in the Water, in 2009 and reaped the benefits that sailing experience.

“I went on to work on ocean race yachts and for Doyle Sails since moving to Australia. Unfortunately, due to health issues, I had had to stop sailing professionally, although I still enjoy racing in Mooloolaba.

“I am very excited by this program. Having experienced something similar in England, I know just how much difference it has made to my recovery by getting involved in an activity which social, fun, challenging and inclusive,” Golbourn said.

Under the direction of John Bankart and his team at Sunshine Sailing Australia, the MYC aims to provide Veterans with training that results in them acquiring new skills which they can be proud of and which will help them integrate as a club member.

The Serve II Sail program goals are several, but Golbourn says they are realistic. “Over a period of about 12 hours of training, split over four days, we want to see the Veterans develop sailing skills and techniques to allow them to safely crew club boats, open them way for them to integrate into the wider sailing community, provide them and their family with the opportunity to become an active member of the MYC through participation in activities both on and off the water, develop a sense of value and belonging to an organisation which may have been lost as a result of discharge from the Australian Defence Force, understand and reinforce the importance of teamwork as part of an effective crew, hopefully progress to larger yachts as crew on a Fun Race or fleet race yacht and represent the club as a member of the Veteran community.”

While the intention is to provide the Veterans with specific sailing skills, there will be a strong emphasis on fun and on inclusion of family members in the program.

The club is still welcoming enquiries and applications for the program. For further information, go here.
