Rain clouds gave way to bursts of sunshine with moderate westerly winds providing the 11 competitors in Race 2 of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Spring Pointscore Series a fun and fabulous afternoon of racing.

Race Officer Steve Kidson got the fleet underway on time on their respective course B in a moderate 11 knot westerly which gusted up to 21 knots at one point throughout the afternoon.

“The afternoon has turned out okay considering the amount of rain we’ve had over the last 24 hours. We managed to get the fleet away on time without rain pouring down,” Kidson said. “The breeze has held in and allowed a full course to be sailed.”

Tim Casey’s Nelson Marek 46 St Hilliers Quest was the first boat to cross this finish line at 15:26:40 with Jason King reporting that the day was better than expected.

“The day turned out better than expected. Sensational conditions  – no rain and 10-15knots of breeze consistently throughout the afternoon,” King said.

“We had a great sail and led right from the start and managed to keep Duende behind us in a predominantly reaching race,” he added.

But it was Duende (Damian Parkes) that secured the Division 1 win from More Witchcraft (John Cameron) and St Hillers Quest.

Peter Howes and his Halvorsen 25 Sea Rug Hoo Ha scored their second consecutive win in Division 2 from Eye Appeal (John Markos and Michael Delaney) and Sagacious V (David Hundt).

“It was a beautiful sail in good company – I think they tried to terrify us with the forecast, which had predicated winds of up to 30 knots and lots of rain, but it never eventuated,” Howes said.

“We had the spinnaker and number 1 headsail up and kept moving all the way around the course. Peter Fallon joined us onboard today and he kept bossing everyone around – even me at times.

“We just kept working hard, concentrating on what we were doing to come away with our second win. It’s a great series!” Howes said.

Niel Burling’s Hanse 40 Baltic Lady was the only boat in Division 3 to start and therefore just had to finish the race cleanly to come away with the win.

The next race will be conducted on Sunday 24 August from 1400hours with casual entries being accepted for each race on a weekly basis by 12 noon on the Thursday prior to racing.
