Team SCA crossed the finish line of Leg Zero earlier this morning, just 100 meters behind Team Alvimedica. For the all-female team, this was their first taste of racing against the full fleet of seven Volvo Ocean 65’s ahead of the start of Leg One to Cape Town on October 11.

The 350 mile course took the fleet from the race start port of Alicante to a turning mark just off Palma, Mallorca and back to Alicante.

“In terms of conditions it was very light airs, so to a certain extent a bit of a drag race and certainly a lot of tactical work involved. But it has shown that we have good boat speed and that we can stay there with the rest of them, which is a really positive feeling and shows that our training has paid off,” says Abby Ehler (GBR).

“We will debrief from the race later today and pull what we can from it, and just keep moving forward. You can definitely see the progress month to month. ”

Before arriving in Alicante earlier this month, Team SCA had spent some eighteen months at team’s base in Lanzarote Spain training both physically, mentally and honing their boat handling skills in order to try and close the 12-year knowledge gap for women sailors in this most demanding offshore sport. But this was the first time that they had lined themselves up against the full race fleet, so what did that feel like:

“There is definitely more pressure. It naturally ups the anti and the nervousness of always wanting to know where everyone is. But it gives you something to place yourself against so it is a real test for what the race will be like,” concludes Abby.

Team SCA Coach Joca Signorini, who is one of the small group of coaches working with the team commented:

“I think the girls should be very happy and they kept fighting with the boats in front, right to the finish. We just need to keep working hard and the results will keep coming. This is a good result for us and for sure the hard work that we have been doing for the past months has paid off.

‘Now it is all about small improvements here and there. We know we still have room for improvement in a lot of areas. That is a good point for us, as for sure some teams are already at the top of their game, but we know we can still improve, so hopefully we can keep our step learning curve.

With just 26 days to the start of the first leg, the squad will now have a few days off ahead of their 38,739-mile race around the world.
