This morning there is a bit of an elephant in the room and I am unsure if I should bring it up considering the elephant is getting smaller and smaller by the nautical mile.

Nonetheless, here we go…Team SCA had a fantastic start! With seven Volvo Ocean Race boats on the water, we were in a prime spot to have good wind (essential) and good space to maneuver (also essential in tight inshore racing). During an inshore race it is vital to follow the rules set up by the race organisers.

Just like a road race or a car race, as well as any other race on land, one of the most important rules is to follow the correct course. So, when we accidentally missed one of our final marks in Alicante bay we had to turn around to complete the course–otherwise we would be disqualified. Unfortunately, this set us back a fair distance and we spent most of yesterday playing catch up as we sailed towards Palma de Mallorca on our own.

Fortunately, sailing is ever changing and Team SCA is currently in a prime position!! “We are currently on our way to Palma, and there was a small island, Ibiza, in the way,” Libby said. “There were three routes you could take to get around Ibiza: top, middle, or bottom—like the famous game show—basically, North, middle, or South. At this point there was a pretty big split in the fleet.” Long, technical story short: we went north and it’s paid off—big time. We are currently in an awesome position on our way to Palma Bay just within miles of Team Brunel and Vestas Wind.

There, the elephant has officially left the boat.

In comparison to the rest of the Volvo Ocean Race, Leg 0 (our current leg) is a sprint—well, a long distance sprint. It’s almost like sprinting a 10 kilometer course when your main objective is a marathon. “This is only two nights out, and you can pretty much do that without sleeping if you had to, so everyone knows they can pretty much give it their all until the finish–knowing you’re going to get rest and food at the end. The Volvo Ocean Race, you’ve got to keep going for a lot longer, you can’t treat it like that otherwise you won’t survive,” Sam explained.

KEY FACTS
– Weather: Sunny and already pretty warm
– Position in the fleet: 10 miles or so behind Brunel and Vestas Wind
– Events: Major Maneuver: headed north of Ibiza
