Day six of the DAVIDOFF Cool Water Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam saw the qualification round of the Philips Tow-in Freestyle competition as fourteen sailors battled it out for the remaining six spots in the final tomorrow night, before the winners of the Reno SUP Challenge were crowned in front of a packed out beach during the early evening.

Philips Tow-in Freestyle Qualifying

With six places up for grabs in tomorrow’s night session final, there was all to play for during the Philips Tow-in Freestyle Qualification. The conditions were extremely tricky for tow-in with small breaking waves on the inside and cross shore winds making life difficult with the winch. However, after a little bit of waiting the contortionists of the windsurfing world burst into life to provide a fantastic display for the onlooking crowds.

Tonky Frans (Tabou / GA Sails) became the first man to book his place in the final as the Bonairean stomped a perfect one-handed burner, closely followed by Max Rowe (Fanatic / North) in second place, who landed a big burner of his own after boosting off a stunt ramp, whilst Ricardo Campello (Patrik / Point-7 /MFC) left it late to qualify with his final move to clinch third.

Meanwhile, the remaining three qualifying places went to Curacao’s Rafael de Windt (F2 / Hot Sails Maui), France’s Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / North) and Bonaire’s Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic / MFC).

Reno SUP Challenge

After the semifinals, three teams battled it out in the final – Team 6 – Iballa Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins), Ricardo Campello (Patrik / Point-7 / MFC), Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) and Moritz Mauch (Starboard / Severne / MFC) – Team 4 – Serena Zoia (GA Sails), Danni Jakobsen (Starboard / Loft Sails), Albert Pijoan (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Sebastian Kornum and finally Team 1 – Amanda Beenen (Tabou / GA Sails), Adrien Bosson, Nicolas Akgazciyan (99 International / Point-7 / AL360 / Maui Ultra Fins) and Steve Allen (Starboard / Severne). Mauch did the majority of the hard work for Team 6 as he gave his teammates a healthy lead at the end of the first leg, after his two rivals fell whilst on a the wave. From here it was relatively plain sailing, although Allen did try to mount a comeback, but unfortunately couldn’t pull it off as Team 6 were soon crowned the winners.

The forecast for tomorrow predicts 12-15 knot winds from the south-southwest during the afternoon, which will hopefully be enough to resume the second slalom elimination or allow some float and ride wave heats to be completed as a new swell is expected to hit Sylt. The skippers’ meeting will take place again at 10am for all three disciplines with the action commencing from 10:30am, if conditions are suitable. Don’t miss any of the action by tuning into here, here you’ll be able to follow everything that happens via the PWA live stream and live ticker.
